Celebrating Black History Month: Spotlight on Entrepreneurs Crafting Change

Jan 30, 2024 | Latest News, Uncategorized

“It’s about the lived, shared experience of all African Americans, high and low, famous and obscure, and how those experiences have shaped and challenged and ultimately strengthened America.”
– President Barack Obama

Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs, and adversities that are an indelible part of our country’s history. Black History Month is an important reminder that diversity should be embraced and celebrated. It serves as a powerful tool for understanding our past, inspiring the present, and creating a bright outlook for our future. We must continue to recognize the invaluable contributions African Americans have made to society.

The origins of Black History Month date back to February 1926 when Carter G. Woodson, the second black American to receive a Ph.D. in history from Harvard, initiated a week-long celebration. Woodson envisioned black history and culture as weapons in the struggle for racial uplift. In 1916, he established the “Association for the Study of Negro Life and Culture,” aiming to make black history accessible to a wider audience. It took fifty years, but in 1976, President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month. He called upon Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Emphasizing our commitment to diversity and showcasing products from black entrepreneurs aligns with the essence of Black History Month. By celebrating the achievements of African American entrepreneurs throughout history, we contribute to greater equity in business today.

The purpose of Black History Month is now centered around celebrating black culture and recognizing the ongoing struggle for racial equity in our society today. It serves as an opportunity to honor the past while working towards a more equitable future for all. Entrepreneurs like Madam C.J. Walker, America’s first female millionaire through her successful hair care products company, and innovators like Elijah McCoy and Percy Julian exemplify the significant contributions made by African American entrepreneurs.

At LifiBifi, we celebrate diversity and encourage all entrepreneurs to embrace their journey and attempt to remove barriers. Your continued support of these fabulous business owners and their best-in-class products is greatly appreciated.
